AS I LEFT home this morning for an early engagement, the sky did not look too promising. Hues of grey patches dominated the eastern sky. The Monday morning traffic was sluggish and crawling at a snailish pace. A friend of mine who grew up listening to The Bangles called this ‘a manic Monday’.
The morning meeting did not turn out too well and I was on the road again as soon as it ended. “I like that rainy day feeling” but since the proposal did not materialize (or subject to further discussions),I was feeling a bit down. Maybe I should sing “Rainy Day and Monday”.
Soon there was a torrential downpour. Although I prefer to describe it as “it rains cats and dogs” (because I love cats and love to look at the husky dogs or the cocker spaniels) but a couple of years ago a friend introduced me the phrase “it rains like trucks and aeroplanes”.
For most of us the rain brings us blessings. In some African countries where the soils are impoverished, the rain is life. Perhaps that’s the reason they have rain witches and rain dances. Even their currency are called ‘pula’ which means “the rain” since rain is critical to the their economic importance. Being impotent (in whatever way) is quite possible should there is a prolonged period without any rain.
In some part of Europe, especially the northern part, rain is a bad news. That’s the reason they created the song Rain Rain Go Away. The Beatles sang (Rain), “If the rain comes they run and hide their heads. They might as well be dead…”. But the crazy banker (in Penny Lane) seemed to be happy with the rain, “On the corner is a banker with a motorcar. The little children laugh at him behind his back. And the banker never wears a mack. In the pouring rain, very strange.”
Ah… That song is my mind again. “Tika hujan turun, sayup mendayu lagu keroncong. Merdu irama dialun. Bersenandung.”
But this one isn’t that keroncong.

what about sudirman's hujan?
Hai Sharzad,
I guessed Monday is not a good day to close a deal. Most of them are either still with the weekend hangover or recovering from it.
During my college day we used to luv the song "I don't like Monday".
But then we even don't like Friday leaving Tuesday to Thursday for study.
I like the sound of rain so much that if I am aware that it is raining at night I would get up, open the sliding door, then sit on the sofa, enjoy my Winston and 'Listen to pouring rain listen to it pour'.
dear dippy
yeah. sudirman's hujan is great too. any special memory?
salam Dato'
Not many people seem to like Monday. I supposed the weekend hangover is as equally bad as recovering from one.
Friday is a rather short day since the lunch break is long and the Friday prayer.
Thursday and Saturday are okay.
dear kata tak nak
I could imagine the Winston soft pack, the sound of the rain hitting the roof, and voice of jose feliciano singing "rain".
Almost romantic there.
Salam shirzad,
Bro...good song. But you're a teaser, aren't you? I mean, laying the words and thoughts about keroncong and what not, then you smack the reader with the not, lol! Cruel.
Yes, I like Jose's 'Rain' as well. In fact, put it up at my listenonly for quite sometime now. Only, have not had the chance to update that blog.
salam brother shah
im still smiling as i read your comment. i was toying with what to write as i drove home. thus, when it began to rain, i got some vague ideas. given the state of mind i was having at that material time, do forgive me it if i could be seen as a bit cruel. :)
Hi Shirzad
And hi Shah. If I may add further. Somehow I'm getting used to your writing styles. Some of them is so deep that I don't even understand, or know the subject of discussion, but I know what your story is getting at.
Anytheway..
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me what fool that I've been..
Another rain song, on the contratry, is simple and straight.
hi ydiana
writing can be like the rain too. it can be a heavy one or a mere drizzling or no rain at all when according to the weatherman there should be one. We all know what rain is, but that does not mean we understand it. There is always a complexity behind a simplicity. Typical of the rain.
What about Barney's "Rain Rain Go Away".. :P
I love the rain.. it has a cleansing effect. Malaysia needs a torrential downpour (trucks and aeroplanes are very much welcome..will make us all millionaires)to flush out all the dirt. Bless the rain.
Salam again bro,
lol! You don't have to apologise; all good writers like to do what you do. Just wish I can step into the shoe too. Thing is, been such a long time since I bought any, I've forgotten my feet size ;)
dear lifejacket
i think barney didnt want that purple rain cause thatll make him invisible. it rained a while ago and im still waiting for my million ringgit (should there be any). btw...it would be nice if i could be informed of your blog add.
hi brother shah
hi again. dont worry about that. about the shoes, maybe we could shop together and wear brand new shoes for the session. :)
Dear lifeboat,
I'm a dormant blogger...haven't been blogging since 2007. And what I've blogged so far, is too embarassing for public view (who wants to read about Barney and kids' drool and stuff? Totally mindless :P)I read yesterday that a writer in Indonesia scattered money to the masses from an airplane...so I guess..in that part of the world, it's raining money instead of trucks and airplanes :P Psstt...if ever you want to officiate the birth of your book that way, let me know ya ;)
dear lifejacket
the fact that uve stopped blogging is a bit disappointing. but im sure youll be back again at some other appropriate time. about that book promotion, yeah i read that too. now asking around from those who still keep tons of the one-cent coin for my book promotion. i think most us could use a much heavier rainfall. :)
Dear lifeboat,
Maybe I'll find the much needed inspiration (and aspiration) here..but then...if it's raining, I would much rather cuddle :P
Assallamualaikum
For me :
Monday - Mourn Day - Meeting tak tentu hala.
Tuesday - A day I cannot identify as A what day.
Wednesday - A wet (crying) day. Normally, this day boss always in a NOT so good mood.
Thursday - I'm thirsty
Friday - Couldn't be a frying day? Most of my friend said it is a doomsday.
Saturday - When people should be happy because of weekend, I sometime felt it is a sat day. Always stuck with my PS3 and Blu-Ray.
Sunday - A sunny day though. It's sound like a good day to close a deal, but yet it is an off day offices except Kelatan and Kedah.
I guess maybe, your deal may not be able to conclude today, but who knows what will happen next. It is always a "blessing in disuguise".
Relax... hujan lebat hari hari pun kat KL ni. (Panjang plak snowflake bercerita ari ni).
Wassallam.
dear snowy
a modified proverb: "every cat has its day." but some cats dont like all the days in a week. when that happen, i think we need to create more days and a week should be eight days (like the beatles said) or maybe more. yeah it rained today. big time. tuesday is always longer than monday. :)
Assallamualaikum
Yeah.. I guessed I have to agree with you. We create 24hrs to 21hrs and call it the "8th day". (Orang cina suka, feng shui). I think I should start for myself, starting tonight so I can spend more days with my cats...
Goodnite Shirz.
Wassallam
Hello Shirzad Lifeboat, I was at Jaflam's garden admiring his still green rambutans noticed your callsign, attracting me as knowing Jaflam ex mariner, then seeing your 'lifeboat', ha ha...
Anyway, Holy Smoke! You certainly one very eloquent blogger, and I noticed CRW's 'Bad moon rising' your time?
What about 'Proud Mary'? Yes, those were my times too.
And your mentioned of kronchong. I love kronchong and all time favourite is 'Serinande'.
But I sure like and admire your style of writing or rather posting.
Very unusual callsign profile you have, somewhat reminds me of the movie, I think,'The 3rd man', ha ha.
Anyway, you keep well and have a nice day, Lee.
dear u. lee
thanks for visiting my blog. songs always remind us of that certain time frames. before i knew what school was, ive already heard my uncle sang, "its now or never, come hold me tight..." these days songs are no longer about entertainment....killing me softly with his song, i wanna sing you a love song...strategies and all that.
since you are into those "architecture", im sure you know what im trying to say here.
Likewise i wish you well too. may the road rise to meet u. :)
Assallamualaikum
I have to ask you this. Can become my essay teacher? I just admire your way of writing. I even ask a "friend" to browse through this blog, you and Aje sure know what to write. My friend said you are such a cultured person.
Should I take back what I have just asked?
Wassallam
heya snowy...walaikumsalam wrt wrb
thanks for saying all those nice things about me although im not too sure if im all those things uve said. the blogging world is something very new to me that at times i wasnt that sure if ive written the right things. But of course there is no such thing as right and wrong in writing. One is always free to express whatever one feels. I owe it to cakapje, my guru, for suggesting that i should start a blog. And so here i am writing what i feel i should share with others (apart from making new and wonderful friends). About being a teacher, i supposed everyone is a teacher to everyone else in some ways or another. Thus, in other words, you are welcomed.
Dear snowflake,
He is all the things you said ;). Lifeboat is such a humble bloke that he would never admit to those things. I was once severely reprimanded for cussing. He cured me for life :P
Salam again bro,
Guru? Mana? Den pun nak bolajor ngan dio tu! Den rasolah, den ni, pangkat pelajar pun tak qualify...
Assallamualaikum
Shirz
Thank you for such a positive response. I shall "kacau" you again for the same matter. Yes! what my friend said about you is true.
Allow me to make way pleez
Hi Lifejacket
Thank you too, for telling me itsy bitsy about Lifeboat (what is this?? life life).
Hi cakapaje
You, another one humble bloke. Alhamdullillah.
Wassallam
semua harga barang dah naik, yang turun hanya hujan, life is so cruel to be treated this way as rakyat malaysia miskin.at least kasi lah sikit ample time a week frm semalam insted of telling d world harga minyak naik . who's teh fool of hignest deciding esok naik harga. nak naik ok but tak lah spontan n abrupt moves.kat papen n dato sharir cakap kat tv august. sapa tipu sap entah lah. yang bodoh rakyat. or rakyat di bodohkan. born to be fool.
too many malaysian are the fool of THE highest degree. ada otak tak de perasaan , jiwa dan hati , ada hati ada perasaan tak ada otak. kadang kadang dialog p ramlee tu betul jugak, citer seniman bujang lapok. KECIK KECIK TAK NAK MAMPUS SUDAH BESAR MENYUSAH KAN ORANG.
hujan yang turun bagaikan mutiara berkilau menyepi bersama rindu.....
Salam Shirzad:
I only knew 3 english songs about rain ie CCR's Have you ever seen the Rain,Jose Feliciano's Rain and that song which goes "Rain Drop keep falling on my head....
Malay song...maybe Sudir's Hujan.
There is a new indie group Hujan but unfortunately I don't fancy their songs.
In Africa they have Rain doctor/rain witches. Here in our own backyard we have bomoh hujan ,right. But their role is the reverse of their African counterpart or namesake. Here our bomoh hujan will be on call when there is some huge event on like a kenduri kawin,or a football final or manybe some events that the PM must attend. I wonder how many bomoh hujan was used during the KL Commonweakth Games in '98?
dear lifejacket
do you think people who fight cases at the courts are capable of weaving words out of manila files and A4 papers? :)
dear cakapaje
sorry brother shah for taking a full 24 hrs to answer you salam. anyone can be a teacher as much as anyone can be a student. :)
heya snowy
we have to be positive in anything we do.
but do be careful with genies, especially when they come in boxes.
about brother shah, indeed he is a very humble person. if he were a gal, it could have been love at first sight for me.
heya rocky
now those are hard words but direct to the points. God take all the good guys early and leaving the bad one to live a long long time.
dear doc
quite correct there. i remember those bomoh hujan sprinkling some dust on a soccer field or placing a broom upside down with a single red chilli and a small red onion.
it worked at times.
Dear lifeboat,
As regard to...
"do you think people who fight cases at the courts are capable of weaving words out of manila files and A4 papers? :)" <--- yeah... some of them are capable of spinning tales as long as Rapunzel's golden hair..but alas, I'm not one of them... I speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God (btw, what's your say on the controversy over the usage of the word "Allah"?)
Hello Shirzad, I was smiling at yours and Lifejackets re 'court cases and manila envelopes', ha ha.
Two years ago, for the first time I was issued with a parking ticket..and the fine $30, but decided to go to court and argue my case.
Da la influenced by Perry Mason and Hawaii Five O, ha ha...was informed better to pay the $30, kalu kala, have to pay $375!!
My Mrs purposely took a day off work to see this 'L' lesen argue my case.
Dalam court semua Mat Sallehs and when the court presecutor called out my name, everyone looking at this Chinaman...arguing a simple $30 fine.
But to me it was a matter of principle...others there assault and battery, robbery, etc...ha ha.
Hey, I won! The Lady judge smiled, "Sir, your case is withdrawn".
Kita sini ya la suka hati, jalan keluar court macham McGarett...alamak, right infront of court house big store with banner, "Designer shoe sale, buy two, get one free".
You tau la women..habis cherita! My pocket kosong by $280! Won my $30....but lost to women's shoe store!
Next time, I will just pay the fine, cheaper. Lee.
I also have songs about rain..
Heaven knows, the grief and endless pain,
Aggravating deep inside the heart,
Hiding heavy tears in pouring rain,
In vain,
Cheers
